Worthy is one of those memoirs where you realize pretty quickly that the woman you thought you knew from television is only ONE version of Jada. Before Hollywood. There was Jada. A little girl growing up in Baltimore. A complicated childhood. Family. Friendships. Struggles. Big dreams. And a young woman trying to figure out who she was before the world ever knew her name. Then comes Hollywood. Acting. Music. Friendships. Love. Motherhood. Marriage. And, of course, Will Smith. But what makes Worthy interesting to me is that Jada isn’t only telling us about the famous people around her. She’s telling us about herself. And there are a few parts of this book that really stayed with me. 1. HER CHILDHOOD & BALTIMORE Jada gives you a look at the environment she came from and the people who shaped her. You start understanding that the woman we eventually saw in Hollywood didn’t just appear out of nowhere. There was a whole life before the cameras. 2. TUPAC And yes, we have to talk about Pac. Jada’s friendship with Tupac is one of the biggest reasons people are curious about this memoir, but what makes those pages interesting isn’t simply the celebrity connection. It’s the depth of their friendship. The love. The disagreements. The different directions their lives were going. And the fact that two young people could mean so much to each other while still being unable to completely understand what the other person needed. 3. WILL & THE LIFE THEY BUILT And then there’s Will. Their relationship, marriage, family, expectations, struggles, unconventional choices, and the many different seasons their relationship went through. Jada talks about the life behind the public image, and whew… there is A LOT to unpack there. There are serious moments. There are painful moments. There are moments that make you say, “Girl… WHAT?” 😂👀 And there are also moments that remind you that underneath all the fame, money, and headlines are two human beings trying to figure out love, family, identity, and themselves. That’s ultimately what I took from Worthy. You can know someone’s name. You can know their movies. You can know their marriage. You can know every headline. And STILL not know their story. That’s why I love memoirs. They give people the opportunity to say: “You know what you saw. Now let me tell you what you didn’t see.” Now, I KNOW some of y’all are about to ask me: I thought Worthy was a REALLY good read. But if I had to choose between her and Will’s book… Will’s book wins for me. And honestly, I could read Will’s book again. Jada’s was a great read for me, but personally, I feel like it was more of a one-time read. And that’s not me saying Jada’s book wasn’t good. It was. But Will’s memoir had me feeling like I was RIDING ALONG with him through his entire life. Childhood → music → The Fresh Prince → Hollywood → marriage → fatherhood → fame → failure → Tupac → Jada → self-reflection. I felt like I was meeting the man behind the superstar. So now, Bookies… HAVE YOU READ JADA PINKETT SMITH’S WORTHY? 👀📖 And if you’ve read BOTH… Which one did YOU think was better? Jada or Will? Don’t give me the politically correct answer. 😂🤭 Give me your REAL reader opinion. And if you haven’t read either one yet… Which memoir are you grabbing first? #BookTok #BookClub #BookRecommendations #hollywood #jadapinkettsmith
