You need to bring more than one in so the pecking is split between both (or more) rather than just one being constantly attacked - Mum of 10 chickens & 6 ducks 😊

I wouldn't add just 1 into an established flock 😬 defo get 2 newbies!! We've had a couple go to chicken heaven this year and it doesn't get easier for the kids but they do understand if they're in pain or suffering then it's the best outcome x

We had a similar experience when a pet died, and I chose to tell her what happened and why. She was devastated and spent a few months being obsessed with death, remembering and getting upset etc. but I feel it was the right choice as she now understands death and has experienced it in a (slightly) smaller way than if a relative/family were to pass, which may happen. It teaches them how to grieve and cope with loss and means they will be more resilient later in life.

I'd say considering how young they are it's not exactly "lying", if they're too young to process death, it's easier to frame it as something they can understand. In older children it could be a good learning lesson in death, however. I personally plan on explaining "going to heaven" to my kids when our pets eventually pass on, since we're religious.

I would always say to be honest with them and use clear language. Kids understand more than we think but also when we say ‘gone to sleep’ etc they can get confused. Use the word died or dead. It’s sad but being honest is the best policy

We lost our dog last summer when our son was almost 3. We used really literal terms saying “Luna died” and we avoided saying anything about her being poorly etc as a reason for her dying because I didn’t want him to be scared of getting poorly. So we were really blunt and just repeated that she had died, she wasn’t here any more and it was absolutely okay to be sad as I was also heartbroken! X

The girls needs to real about death sooner or later, they may never be ready for that talk, but its harder for the parents to tell than them to hear. I'm sorry about your chicken

yes u tell your children the truth. People underestimate how smart kids are. This is a wonderful teaching opportunity. if u need help u could hire age appropriate books about loss from the Library that explain death in a way they understand ☺️

Yeah, chickens need to be kept as a minimum as a flock of 3. So ideally, get two more chickens just in case one dies again. Also 2 chickens being integrated is much easier than 1.

Having animals as a child is a great way for children to learn about death as horrible as it sounds I have had animals all my life and believe it has helped me understand and learn more about them explain to them what happened too even if they don’t understand they will appreciate it 🥰

As an experienced chicken owner, it’s very difficult adding only 1 chicken the other two will heavily heavily gang up and bully it, you’re either best keeping only 2 or getting 2 new ones. As for telling the kids my own 2 girls have always been present when my husband has had to 💀 one of our chickens, they’ve always been there when we’ve buried them etc it’s part of life and part of keeping animals, also chickens grieve a lot! They won’t be themselves for a while it’s normal ❤️

Personally, I think the quicker they learn about the circle of life the better. I’ve always been really honest to my children about death, let them have their feels and say goodbye, it will help later in life ❤️but ultimately it is your decision lovely, you do what you feel is best x

Coming from a farmers wife, always tell them the truth. My daughter is 3, and knows about “the circle of life”. She knows that we love and care for our animals until they die, and although it’s very sad it’s a part of life.
