You do not need a diagnosis for an ehcp, my son has a diagnosis but no echp because apparently 'he doesn't need it' which makes me sooooo angry!

1 on 1 support is very very rare and they've told you wrong. EHCP does mean additional funding. you can apply without a diagnosis.

Sorry, this is unpopular but why are parents surprised that schools can't magic up a 1-1 TA to support their child at the drop of a hat? Your kid started school, they can't manage her behaviour whilst providing an adequate level of care and attention to the other 20 kids in the room so they've made reasonable adjustments by reducing her timetable and trying to push through the EHCP which could go some way to covering some of the overheads for her support (won't cover all of it btw- they rarely do). Yes your child needs help but that's not the school's fault and there are processes that need to happen for her to get it. By reducing her timetable they are demonstrating on her EHCP application that she can't cope in the current setup. They are helping her. Or would you prefer she's allowed in school at the detriment of all of the other kids in that room?

Regarding a reduced timetable - you do not have to do it! Drop her off and start time and pick her up at home time! They can’t refuse her full time, and then they can ring you whilst you’re on standby. This may then help kick into gear the extra support she needs! It sounds like they just aren’t even giving her a chance to succeed. “Hurry up the diagnosis” is absolute shite! You can start an ehcp yourself without any diagnosis. X

I got diagnosed with ADHD at 36. My whole life I thought I was built wrong. My daughter was diagnosed at 7, she's had the right support and now loves school. Sometimes a label helps others know how to treat us. Just like laundry, our label can make sure we're cared for in the right way. Big love hun xx

You don’t need a diagnosis for EHCP. If you want one quicker right to choose is really good. There are lots of reasonable adjustments they could be making for her without an EHCP. Happy to chat if you ever need. I’m audhd and all 3 of my children have needs. X

Life is different for our kids to us, our kids need a diagnosis in this world. You don't need a diagnosis for an EHCP, they will know that, my recommendation is to find a SEND advocate locally who can advise you of the correct processes.

Beth this broke my heart 🥺 teachers and professionals say a lot they treat everyone equal etc, but realistically they put neurodivergence children into a box separate from everyone else, and it can lead to this. Here for you beautiful x

Oh sweetheart. It’s so tough. You don’t need a diagnosis for an ehcp. They can have an ehcp without so don’t listen to that hon. Tell the school they need to apply now for it. Remember she has an amazing mum fighting her corner. Love you x

Deputy Head here. They should be doing a phased transition for her with her starting reception where you all have time to talk about what you do to support her when she's dysregulated so that they can do that when she's in their care. While she is settling they can do an emergency HLN funding bid to support paying for an adult to work with her. Funding is awful though so she won't get enough for 1:1, it's very rare that any children do and its mostly paid for out of school budgets in different pockets of money. Have you been to see any other schools? You shouldn't feel threatened with suspension, they should be making reasonable adjustments and they should have had positive handling training in case she's hurting herself or others so that everyone is safe. If they aren't doing these things you can follow the school complaints procedure. We have had rocky starts and had parents in to model what they do and to see how the children respond to school adults so that everyone develops a good understanding and can work together to make it work. The child is the centre at the end of the day and it's about what's best for her.

I'm in a similar position right now. you have to push and fight and never give up, but unfortunately a mainstream school has limitations on what they can offer. Most importantly do what you feel is right for her and you.. I'm now in a position of home educating for the moment. sending lots of love mama, you got this ❤️

I work in sen, studied sen and social inclusion at uni, have an audhd 6 year old, the school can and should apply for emergency ehcp, she can be more than one waiting list for a diagnosis but she doesn’t technically need one for an ehcp although it helps, an ehcp would also help her in that school too but it would need to actually say 1-1 as they use the loopholes and say it doesn’t actually say 1-1 support and would just place a class LSA with her, it sounds like they’re fobbing her off and that’s not on at all! The school in junior called me in one day to discuss their concerns that my son is showing traits, he was self harming when he got overwhelmed like repeatedly smash his head into the desk and it had now become a safety concern.
