I’m not entirely sure if you were also referring to caribbeans when you said “we are Africans in Britain” so feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, while as caribbeans we are 110% of African descent (although some refuse to accept that for reasons beyond my understanding) I think that labelling all black people in the uk “African in Britain” isn’t a fitting title and the idea of putting all Caribbean people under the umbrella of African is dismissive of Caribbean history and culture, for that reason I think that black British is a fair, but not perfect title.

There’s a lot of identities we need to change. We are British and Africans or Caribbean. We need to change the name African. I think Black British is fitting for now but not the future.

Unfortunately we don’t rlly have a choice tho lowk, if we’re born here we will just naturally pick up on a lot of British culture in general so naturally it will birth a new culture (BlackBritish) once we mix what we grew up with in our own households with what we were exposed to as children growing up in Britain. But I fw ur take tho

Find the “Africans in France” community and you’ll see that their culture is obviously different. You adopt the culture(s) of the country you were raised in, full stop. If you were raised in the continent of Africa, your cultural expressions will be different because you’re surrounded by, raised in and have a direct affect on it, all cultures change. “Africans in Britain” makes more sense for those who immigrated, “Black British” is fine for those who were mostly raised here.

Depends. My parents were born and grew up in the UK and so was I. If I go to the Caribbean they see me as British even my Caribbean Nan addresses me as such.

Exactly, it’s like i’m aware people are born and grew up here so their nationality and mentality is British. But they shouldn’t address themselves as black British because we’re really just Africans living in Britain. Like we couldn’t care less about Napoleon and St George, we don’t have Sunday roast, on Remembrance Day who the fuck are we remembering? Nobody died for us? We don’t eat British meals like what is black British culture. A Ghanaian can be considered black British but he’s eating fufu and Jolof rice at home. A Somali is considered black British and there eating injera and rice with banana, there’s jack sht brittish about us. I’m not saying don’t mention being British I’m just saying it’s best to identify with your ethnicity.

Black culture in Britain that part I agree. However the more watered down it’s gets we are definitely a combination while also being able to identify the strength of black peoples influence. “The colonised cannot identify with the colonisers” 🎯

interesting take. but if u r black and have british citizenship does that not make u black british. its not denying our african culture and ethnicity but it acknowledges the fact that there is a culture difference between black africans and black british

Facts bro. People are begging it and tryna mirror Black American (which is a real ethnic group). “Black British” is not a real ethnicity.

I think we just have to come up with another name to refer to the same culture/ identity that is currently being called 'black british'. A lot of ppl ( and rightfully so) are going to feel uncomfortable with being referred to as british, considering its history in relation to black people. But we are going to need a term to refer to our community. Acting like we're the same as the people in our countries of origin doesn't help anyone. We are brought up with ideas, conversations and politics that are not relevant back in our ethnic countries, and ppl pretending otherwise is what often causes fights between diasporans and the ppl in Africa or the Carribbean.
