On 17 September, the Franciscan family celebrates the Feast of the Stigmata of St. Francis of Assisi-a profound moment in the life of the Poverello when his love for the Crucified Christ became visibly marked upon his own body. In September 1224, while spending a period of intense prayer and fasting on Mount La Verna in Italy, Francis received a vision of a six-winged Seraph bearing the image of the Crucified Christ. Franciscan tradition recounts that afterward the wounds of Christ appeared in his hands, feet and side. The feast is celebrated annually on September 17, recalling Francis' extraordinary conformity to Christ crucified. This commemoration carries particular significance in 2026, as the Franciscan Family marks the 800th anniversary of the Transitus of St. Francis 1226-2026, commemorating his passage from earthly life to eternal life. It is the culmination of the Franciscan centenary journey recalling the final years of his life. The Stigmata remind us that Francis did not merely admire Christ from a distance-he desired to be configured to Christ in love, embracing the Gospel so completely that the mystery of the Cross shaped his entire life. May St. Francis teach us to recognize Christ in the wounded, to become instruments of peace, and to allow the love of the Crucified Lord to transform us from within.
