The most recognised piano opening in the world, and its own composer didn't think it was among his best. He was about thirty when he wrote it, in 1801. Everything we now call his late work was still ahead of him, so you can see the argument. It's just strange hearing someone be that dismissive of the thing everybody loves them for.
