@nourishingapothecary: Endometriosis is often talked about as though it is simply a reproductive condition. But the clinical picture can be much broader than painful periods alone. Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disease that can affect multiple systems, with symptoms extending beyond the reproductive system. Women may experience pelvic pain, painful periods, bowel and digestive symptoms, fatigue, fertility challenges and significant impacts on quality of life. In this snippet from Season 2, Episode 4 of Inside the Apothecary, Mel, our endometriosis and fertility naturopath at Nourishing Apothecary, explains why she thinks about endometriosis as a whole body condition rather than looking only at what is happening in the pelvis. One important clarification: endometriosis is not currently classified as an autoimmune disease. There is research exploring immune dysregulation and associations between endometriosis and autoimmune conditions, which is why there can be similarities in the way we think about its systemic effects. But calling it an autoimmune disease outright goes further than the evidence currently supports. This distinction matters because understanding the underlying pathology changes the questions we ask and the areas we investigate.
