One day I was in NYC & I got a call from my friend Natalia. She told me about a spot that just opened on Frankford that she NEEDED me to try. It may have taken a little bit, but I finally got here. El Fogon just opened this summer and will be in this spot through December, and I gotta tell you, I was IMPRESSED by this place. Their menu is small and wildly affordable, and insanely delicious. I went with a group of friends, we BYOB’ed, and we ordered everything. I went over and chatted with the chef and got a behind the scenes look at his mad scientist set up and it was a true wonder to behold. The smell coming off this grill made my mouth water. You can tell Chef’s passion for food immediately and I knew we were in for something special. When the food was ready, we all got plates and I had to try it all. The Brisket on special that day melted in my mouth. The Wings were so crispy and so tender at the same time. The Rice was infused with that smoke from the grill and may have been the best Rice and Beans I’ve ever had. The Plantains and the Tostones were INSANE. The Pernil was ridiculous; I can’t remember a time when I’ve had better pork. But, in my opinion, the star of the show is the Chicken Quarter. That dark meat is smoked and charred and basted in sauce and is a flavor bomb. I could not get enough. I cleaned the bone so easily and wished I had room for more. I cannot wait to go back to El Fogon and I truly can’t wait to see them expand. With food this good, I’m ready to shout it from the rooftops.
