As a software engineer in Canada, I make a good income. I could qualify for a mortgage. And yet, I have no plans to buy a house just because I'm "supposed to." When I moved to Canada, I thought the path to success was: Finish your studies → Get a good job → Buy a house → Pay off the mortgage → You're wealthy. After all, that's been the Canadian dream. But the more I learned about money, the more I started questioning it. For me, the question isn't: "Can I afford the house?" It's: "Is this the best use of my money?" Because buying a $1M+ home isn't just about being able to afford the mortgage. You could be putting $100K+ into a down payment, then committing yourself to years of: → Mortgage interest → Property taxes → Maintenance → Insurance → Closing and transaction costs And there's another cost people don't talk about enough: Opportunity cost. That money is now tied up in one illiquid asset. Instead, I could rent the home I want and invest my capital in diversified assets like stocks and ETFs. That gives me something I value enormously: Flexibility. I can move. I can change jobs. I can invest more. I can take advantage of opportunities. And I can build a portfolio designed to eventually fund my life without needing to sell my home. And here's where I think FOMO gets dangerous. Your friends buy a house. Your coworkers buy a house. Your parents tell you that buying is the smartest investment you'll ever make. So you start thinking: "Maybe I should buy one too." But being able to afford something doesn't mean you should buy it. I don't want to be house rich and cash poor. I want financial freedom. I want a portfolio that can eventually sustain my lifestyle. That's what the Canadian dream looks like to me. Not owning the biggest house I can qualify for. I'd rather build a $1M investment portfolio than "feel" wealthy because I own a $1M house. That's the trade-off I'd choose.
