@goatcult.media: In August 2020, 27-year-old Aleshia Rogers had just given birth to her third child by C-section in Lincoln, Nebraska. During her recovery, she took ibuprofen for the pain something she says she’d used without problems since she was a teenager. About three weeks later, she began feeling seriously ill. She developed a high fever, a rash across her chest, and painful, swollen, bloodshot eyes. Rogers later said she sought medical attention more than once as her condition worsened, initially being told she could have conjunctivitis and then scarlet fever. But within hours, the situation became terrifying. Blisters spread across her face, eyes and chest, and her skin began peeling away. When Rogers returned for medical care, she was diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), which progressed to toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) a severe immune reaction in which large areas of skin can blister and detach. Medications are responsible for most cases of SJS/TEN, and NSAIDs such as ibuprofen are among the drugs associated with the condition. Rogers herself says doctors believe ibuprofen was the most likely trigger in her case. Her condition became critical. Rogers has said doctors estimated that 90–95% of her skin was affected. She developed sepsis and multi-organ failure and was placed in a medically induced coma for approximately three weeks. During that time, she underwent extensive treatment for her damaged skin as well as an amniotic membrane procedure on her eyes, used to help protect the ocular surface from severe damage. Her family was warned that she might not survive. Against those odds, Aleshia woke up. She survived an illness that had transformed an ordinary postpartum recovery into a fight for her life. Years later, she has continued speaking publicly about what happened and volunteers with the Stevens-Johnson Syndrome Foundation to raise awareness of the rare condition.
