I’m not talking only about wives drinking their husband’s foot water. I’m talking about the whole practice of washing someone’s feet, treating those feet as worthy of worship and then drinking that water whether it’s a wife doing it for her husband or parents doing it for their daughter and son in law. I know many people do this out of love, respect and tradition and I’m not questioning their feelings. But we can respect someone’s feelings and still question the practice. What is the logic behind drinking someone’s foot water to show love or respect? Why does love need an act that places one person above and another below? And if the answer is simply, “That’s our culture” then maybe that is exactly why we need to ask questions. Because calling something culture doesn’t automatically make it logical, equal or unquestionable. When you practice this today, do you genuinely want your future generations to practice the same thing? Do you want your children and grandchildren to continue it simply because “this is what we have always done”? Or should they be allowed to ask why? I’m not saying people should be forced to stop. I’m saying we should be able to rethink what we continue doing just because it was passed down to us. Love can be mutual. Respect can be mutual.
