A commercial waterjet cutter can cost about 150,000 dollars, and this one started as a 150 dollar pressure washer from Amazon. Ben Krasnow of Applied Science took a Sun Joe SPX3000, one of the most popular electric pressure washers on Amazon and rated at 2,000 PSI, and turned it into an abrasive waterjet. The key change was one valve: he machined a copper copy of a brass part so the valve works as a plain pressure relief valve, added spring bias, and pushed the pump to around 3,200 PSI. The water goes through a ruby orifice with a 0.018 inch hole that costs about 12 dollars, then into a tungsten carbide mixing tube, where 80 grit garnet sand falls in from a simple gravity bucket. The sand particles do the cutting, like tiny bullets. It cuts 1/16 inch aluminum at about 2 inches per minute, 1/8 inch aluminum at half that, 3/8 inch hardwood, and in water-only mode foam and even bread. To be fair: it's guided by hand, not CNC, the motor now pulls 20 to 21 amps on a 20 amp circuit so it only ran for a few minutes at a time, it sprang a leak at 3,500 PSI, and a commercial machine is far faster.
