@timtalksmoneysg: PSA: I'm going to keep saying this.👇 If you're buying VOO, QQQ, or VT because you saw an American YouTuber recommend it, STOP. 🚨 These are US-listed. Instead, buy VWRA, CSPX and CNDX, the UCITS, Ireland-domiciled, and European-listed versions of the same exposure, which hold the same underlying companies. Remember, when a US-listed ETF pays a dividend to a Singapore-based investor, the US withholds 30% of it at source, and you can't claim it back. Why? There's no tax treaty between Singapore and the US. The Ireland-domiciled versions cut that dividend withholding tax to 15%. Half the tax drag but the exact same companies. On top of that, you have US Estate Tax. Any US-listed assets over US$60,000 trigger a 40% tax on death. That threshold is low, and it catches people who don't realise it applies to them. If you have a net worth in the millions, this is definitely something you need to be thinking about because the IRS in the US can extend its tentacles globally to claw back tax. what about Canada-domiciled ETFs? would they be a good alternative to US-domiciled ETFs for non-US investors, or is Ireland still more tax-efficient?
