@jonathan.hiebert: My siblings and I kept pushing off the hard conversations to create a plan for our aging parents and now we need a plan but don’t have on.

I used to work in a nursing home I’m not saying this to be awful, but please get every asset that is in your parents name under your name or your siblings names ASAP. That way in case you have to go the route of state Care, the state won’t have as much of a chance of seizing those assets to pay for your parents needs. This is advice that I got from people I took care of. Is there any way you or a sibling can temporarily move in with your parents or have them move in with you just so there’s an extra set of eyes on them. Also, I understand that this is a very pricey route to go, but sometimes you can find a certified home health aid by posting a personal ad yourselves, and working out compensation between you and that person instead of going through an agency.

It’s really difficult when your parents/grandparents get old. My grandparents were fiercely independent and I actually moved back home to my mom’s who live next-door to them to help with keeping tabs on them. My mom is almost 80 now and I fully understand what you’re talking about. My mom is fiercely independent as well and is doing extremely well right now, but I know the time will come when that isn’t this case. Hang in there.

You have to do what is best for them while not sacrificing yourself or your happiness too much. My heart goes out to you. I recently lost both mine before 80. Have the hard convo and level with them. Give them choices and lotions, but do not beat yourself up. Do your best and be at peace.

We tried to do that about 5 years ago but my mother torpedoed the deal at the last minute. It would have allowed them to have access to Medicaid right now

Check with their Medicare plan. So many of the plans offer nursing assistance that is included with their plan and people just don’t know about that option. There are also Medicare advantage plans that will help pay for their groceries, utilities and pet food. I wish you all the best.

Sadly you aren't alone there's alot of elderly who dont have money. Im im the same boat with my parents granted they aren't quite as old your parents, in there 60s, but have no money, no Healthcare ive triedto help them but they dont want it., if any major health episodes happen they are screwed. All we can really do is just try and help them when they aren't able to help themselves anymore. I Do hope the best for your parents Jonathan, keep making those flower crowns 😃

if u have sinlings u need all to weigh in on it n not leave u alone to care for them. I was my dad's care giver untill he died. I lived with him untill he passed. my mom had to b put in a nursing home cause of dementia. it was all around hard n sad so don't do it alone!! just cause u're the youngest doesn't mean it's ur responsibility at all!! ❤️❤️❤️

You are at the beginning of a hard road. I’m about 15 years in to this. I just have Mum now and she has behavioural issues that were largely managed by my father when he was alive to the point of us not realising how bad they were. And now she is 88 and her behaviour is a big problem. Because of this she has had to go into an Elderly Mental Infirmity (EMI) care home. It’s two hours by car from me which is a nightmare but at least the local council foot the bill. We started out with me caring for both of them whilst Dad was alive but my husband has since been diagnosed with rapidly evolving MS and I am now his full time carer. Most of the time it feels like trying to nail jello to the ceiling but also there are the deeply special times of being able to serve those who have served me since I was a child. Some moments are truly beautiful and very special indeed. You get to love them with actions like never before. You get to protect them like they protected you as a child. It is very, very hard work. Mentally, emotionally and, at times, physically. May you all be blessed during these final years you have together and may you have all the energy, emotional resilience and strength you will need friend ❤️

It's a horrible situation to be in!! I hope you are doing okay. It's super confusing and you'll doubt your decisions a million times. But it'll be okay. Decisions made out of love are always good. 🥰

I’m a home health nurse so feel free to message me with any questions. Check your local Area Agency on Aging and see what resources are available in your area. If they have a medical need, they could get home health for a little while but we are medical only. We don’t come stay with them every day. Check your state Medicaid program for some sort of Elderly Waiver program. Most states have one and they may be able to qualify for some home assistance that way.

Even if they are your parents. You have no obligation to have to care for them. You don’t have to do anything apart from give them guidance and some support if they allow you too. Otherwise get support from local authorities and services x
