Non-profit companies are motivated to provide a service. For profits are motivated to make money.

Prior to the 1994, Pearson was operated by the federally so Ottawa had decision making power over our airport. Toronto politicians, businesses, regional & community leaders pushed for a local airport authority. GTAA was created so the GTA could have more of a say in how Pearson developed as a major economic hub. The model was community-based and nonprofit while the federal government still owned the land. Now Carney is proposing a shift toward private investors through longterm concessions, and I think we need to slow down and really ask what that means.😒😒😒😒

My understanding from reading other similar agreements is it only covers the retail operations, including things like the restaurants, shops, lounges and car rental. The actual airport operations would remain under the GTAA.

the average Canadian does not even understand how a not for profit operates differently than a for profit business; I have run two nonprofits and the amount of time spent explaining the difference and dealing with public distrust is almost enough to keep me out of the sector

I am still admittedly confused about what "concessions" means. Is it a kind of lease, if so what are the terms and for how long? Will the feds retain a percentage of these concessions?

As soon as you introduce profit into the equation, cost for consumers will go up, service will go down and things will be compromised. We've all seen this movie multiple times.

All of these contracts will have a guaranteed profit built nto them. They'll have to raise prices and cut services to make sure they get their $$$ and we'll pay for it. Ask anyone in NS what they think of NS power and their guaranteed 9% profit

I can’t fathom folks still ascribing to the idea that profit motive brings value to consumers - especially when PE is involved.

So basically our airports are going to fall in to disrepair when the private companies neglect the building itself while raising the cost for flights and for vendors, all while reducing the quality of service by hiring cheaper and less qualified labour, right?

Amazing watching people buy into this idea. I cannot think of one case of privatizing anything that has led to lower costs & better service.

Pearson already has a reputation for being a terrible airport. I can’t imagine how much worse it would get once the operations are privatized. Another thing that raised a red flag for me was selling off parking. It’s already incredibly expensive to park there and they’d definitely only go up

is privatization going to make flying more affordable or more expensive? is privatization going to make airports more efficient? as someone who works in an industry similar to whats being proposed I know the answer to these questions.

The best part is when the "investors" get a massive loan or grant from the government to make the purchase, cut staff, cut salaries, make security lines longer, stop cleaning anything, never maintain facilities or machinery, and then write off their "losses" against the company income tax while paying their c-suite millions in salary and stocks.
