Read Hosea chapter 9vs10, it says ‘when I found Israel, it was like the first stripe of a figtree’ and John the Baptist had said every tree that doesn’t produce fruit is cut down and hewn into the fire, when Jesus cursed the figtree, he was teaching the disciples that the fate of Israel had been set since they had not produced any fruits, hence Jesus gave a parable of a figtree that did not produce fruit for 3 years and upon the Master’s return , a request was made for it to be cut down, so Jesus was disciplining Israel who had received the Messiah for 3 years and failed to produce fruit and they were cursed from the root up, as John the Baptist had said.
