The puck is about 7.6 centimeters (3 inches) in diameter and about 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) thick, with a weight of roughly 156–170 grams. Its flat shape allows it to slide across the ice rather than roll like a ball. Before a game, pucks are often kept cold because a frozen puck behaves better on the ice. When it is cold, it becomes less bouncy and slides more predictably. This is especially important at high levels of hockey, where players make extremely fast passes and shots.
