@mind_yourboundaries: ‼️ Here’s what I wouldn’t do… If my DIL pulls away (or needs to recharge) I’d make sure to give her space. ❌ I wouldn’t chase or reach for her more. Sometimes we can try to make ourselves feel better by reaching for the person who may need a breather, which can make them pull away further. When I go through my bouts where I need to take a break, my MIL will text me things like “No need to respond, just thinking about you and hope x is going well.” ❌ I wouldn’t put my son in the middle. It sounds like the times you have asked him, he always gives you the same answer, “Mom, she’s just busy, nothing’s wrong.” I’d choose to believe them. ❌ I wouldn’t allow my brain to ruminate. When I worry about a relationship but the person keeps telling me everything's fine, I keep a running list of the positive moments and the ways they've shown the relationship is solid. When the worry creeps back in, I have real evidence to reassure myself. I hope this helps! 💛 You sound like a wonderful MIL and like you’ve built a trusting relationship with your DIL. One where she knows when she needs a break she can, and she feels confident that you’ll be there when she’s ready to come back. Hats off to you and keep us posted if this reframe helps! Sounds like MIL needs to back off and just accept DIL for who she is. It's not DILs responsibility to constantly make MIL feel secure about herself

dil sounds like she gets easily over stimulated. Just let her have her space when she needs it

Why can’t MIL’s realize how hard it is to be a mom and how busy we are. It’s not all about them and in laws are not at the forefront of our minds EVER our kids are. I know that MIL’s didn’t have to report to their parents all the time. Why in the world are we expected to do that?

My mother-in-law is dismissive and manipulative. every time we get close, she does something that pushes me away. it's not me being hot and cold, it's me protecting myself from a pattern I've seen over and over for years. Example like when my grandfather passed, instead of comforting me, she called it ridiculous that we were in California with my family instead of just staying back and do a FaceTime or zoom call with the family. Then after she does something like that, she gets overly nice and I fall for it, and that's when she strikes again! Honestly these mother in laws needs to stop playing the victim and realize the hurt they cause their daughter in laws!

Very well could be the case … if it’s within the mother in laws capacity in one of these times she could say hey haven’t heard from you for a few days I know life can get so busy can I drop off dinner one day this week or come hang out with the kids one day for any errands you have? I pull away when life is overwhelming AND I’m awful at asking for help. I’d love to get an offer when things are rough … and if she declines it then maybe don’t try it again but knowing you’re being thought of and cared for when things are overwhelming is super valuable.

DIL sounds like she's a narcissistic. MIL needs to keep back a bit and set her own boundaries. When she reaches out don't be to ready to catch up when she's good.

This is so me, I love seeing my family; however, I enjoy my quiet time and need my alone time with just my husband, kids and grandchildren! My life and career can burn me out at times!

Other people outside my kids and husband are a huge emotional drain. I might be neurodivergent (my kids are on the spectrum) but I find that the ability to maintain relationships with anyone, even my own parents is very hard now that I am managing them the health, education, mental and spiritual health of two boys.

I run hot and cold with my MIL. It’s generally because she did something but I don’t have any support from the family (my husband, etc) so I just say that nothing is wrong.

I think if the mother in law can understand the dynamics of her daughter in laws family that might help explain a lot. For example if her daughter in law is somewhat distant from her family of origin then that speaks volumes as to what type of attachment style the daughter in has.

Same - but I see my mil once a week. So I always try to be engaging in person and my recluse overstimulated self via text 😂 or I just make my husband communicate with his parents because I just can’t

From personal experience, I’ve been the DIL in this circumstance. I really like people, enjoy their time, but it also takes a lot out of me, and I need a rest day. Like today I’m heating up my coffee, going to put my feet up, do a little personal project, then go back to sleep, and later today I’ll people, but until then, the phone stays on silent. It’s nothing personal, but I do have to say that others need to stop expecting the upbeat wild person everyday/ night; I’m allowed to rest, re balance my nervous system without having to explain. ❤️

I have depression and anxiety. I occasionally go 2-3 months where I cannot function beyond making sure the kids are fed, get to their extracurriculars, and homework is done. Any housework that isnt cooking, dishes, or laundry are put on the back burner. So once I "re-emerge" I have to play catch-up. (And due to my hormones, it usually happens for at least 1 week a month too.) My family and friends are extremely understanding when I go silent. My MIL cannot understand and is convinced that I hate her during those periods of time. Its so hard!

My mother in law says she doesn’t know what’s wrong, but we tell her, she doubles down and then we distance ourselves and she tells everyone she has no idea why. Then when we tell her again she says she’s never heard that before. My husband has started resending her texts to prove she was told and responded. I think there might be more to the story here.

I feel like that could very well be the case. I’m like that as well. I’m always really warm in person or communication but I shy away from people in between. My introverted self takes over.

When I met my MIL, I was in Uni, newly married, Grandfather just passed, and so there are periods that I couldn’t see anyone. She took it extremely personal. And eventually, we had to go NC. Don’t be like my MIL, and ruin a relationship with your DIL.
