It has now emerged that Robert Kraft, who felt Macklemore was making comments akin to hate speech, wielded far more influence over the decision than was previously understood.⁠ ⁠ The controversy started with an earlier performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, when the opening act Macklemore — whose real name is Ben Haggerty — chanted “Free Palestine” and performed his protest song Hind’s Hall, dedicated to five-year-old Hind Rajab, who was killed by Israeli forces in Gaza.⁠ Reporting by The Wall Street Journal revealed that Kraft, 85, stepped in to call Sheeran and tell him that he would not host the American rapper at his Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts. Kraft also indicated that broader conversations had taken place among influential people in the NFL league and that the owners of the Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles would follow suit in their own venues.⁠ During the call, Kraft was said to have acknowledged the sensitivity of the crisis in Gaza but argued that the rapper’s remarks crossed the line into hate speech and could not be considered freedom of speech. Macklemore has not accepted this.
