@isabelle994949: My biological father gave me a car for my 17th birthday, then told my stepdad, "now he knows who his real father is." — I wanted to humiliate him back, but then I came up with a lesson the whole family would remember. My biological father left when I was three. For fourteen years it was Mom and me, and money was the thing we talked about most and never out loud. She met Ray when I was sixteen. He already had two kids — Danny, eleven, and Cara, nine, every other weekend. So we became five people living on money for three, and it got harder, not easier, and he never once acted like I was the part that made it harder. He came to every game. That included the season I never got off the bench. He sat across the kitchen table from me, doing chemistry he didn't understand. One night around eleven, I said I was done and I was dropping it. "Read it to me again," he said. "We're not stopping." That fall he and Mom opened a college account for me and started putting in whatever was left at the end of the month. Some months that was nothing. He was paying child support for two other kids at the time. He never told me about the account. Mom did. Everybody at school was getting cars that year. Old ones, mostly, but cars. I knew we couldn't, and it honestly didn't bother me. You stop wanting things when you know exactly what they cost. Then on my seventeenth birthday, my father showed up. Fourteen years. He'd never remarried; no other kids. He put his hand on my shoulder like he'd earned it and walked me out to the driveway, and there it was. Brand new. "Happy birthday, son." Mom didn't say anything. Ray stood back by the porch with his hands in his pockets. My father was smiling at me, but he turned his head toward the porch when he said it. "Now he knows who his real father is." Ray looked at the ground. My father held the keys out on his open palm and waited for me to thank him. Everything I wanted to say to him was right there. I could have said it in front of all of them and watched him drive home with it. Instead, I turned toward the porch — "Ray. Come here a second." See less

My youngest Son who died almost 2 months ago didn't consider his biological father his dad, but his stepdad WAS HIS DAD. He loved him so much and I know "our" Son's absence is affecting him something bad. All I ask from anyone in this comment section is that if you're a believer, would you please pray for our family? 🕊️✝️🕊️

@J D (204Heavy): My Dad left when I was about 5. My mama,me, in four sisters. My three older sisters were from a different marriage. Me and my little sister were of the second marriage and my mother. My dad was in and out of my life for a while but became less and less prevalent, until I never saw him at for years. My mama met my stepdad when I was about 14, They got married, he stayed, he was there every day. He put up with all my BS whie I was growing up, he called me son, he called me number one. I’m 56 now. I got married years ago raise three kids. Got divorced kids moved away. He’s still there, with my mama. He still calls me son, he still calls me number one. I love him more than I could ever tell him. He’s not my stepdad, he’s my father. He more than earned that title! He’s my hero!

I hate the word STEPmom or Stepdad. They’re the ones who STEPPED UP when someone else didn’t! Thank you to all the stepmoms and dads for being there!!

Doing the deed doesn’t make you a dad! I never met my “real” father. I had a man in my life when I was 5 who became my stepfather. One day when I was 17 he came to me and asked if I ever wanted to try and find my real dad. I looked at him with a puzzled look and told him “you are my real dad”. That man raised me and was there for me through thick and thin! Blood doesn’t mean shit!!!

My husband and I got together when I was 50. I had 2 adult kids and a grandson, and he had 1 adult son. From then on, we each became parents of 3 and he was their dad too along with their bio dad's who we frequently got together with. He was Grampy from the beginning with our now 3 grandkids. Our mixed families including all in laws have made a huge loving family for all of our kids and it has worked out great.

There is a difference between a father and a dad. Anyone can father a child but it takes someone special to be a dad.

My sperm donor cheated on my mom their whole marriage! I don't remember him being around except a few weekends. He would take my brother and go do stuff and leave me with the witch stepmother and step sisters. My Step-dad IS MY FATHER DAD! He took my brother and I in and did all kinds of fun things with us. My Dad was my Dad, and the other one was my brothers Dad. I got the best deal out of it all. My Dad never had kids so I was his daughter. RIP Dad

I never had a dad. I’m 50 y/o now & I’ll give ya a piece of advice. Blood doesn’t make you family. I have a lot of ppl I’m related to but I have very few ppl I call family. It’s obvious from what you wrote you understand the difference between a man being there for ya & a man who thinks gifts makes up for never being around. You’re a lucky kid. Always appreciate the ppl who appreciate you.

People don’t realize just how hard a step parent has it when young kids are involved with your relationship. Step parents don’t get the recognition that they deserve for help raising someone else’s kids. I know. I have been there, and her daughter was allowed to disrespect me in my own home. I’m glad it’s over

Ok I’m sobbing. My husband married me and 3 kids. My ex was never involved so their “stepdad” took over and raised them like his own. It wasn’t until one of my boys passed away that my ex realized what he missed all those yrs. It was too late. My husband stood by me and my other boys and held on to all of us. He’s the strongest most loving man I’ve ever known. He loved those boys and raised them and he didn’t have to. Life is short. If anyone were to ask my boys who their father is they won’t skip a beat to tell you. Biology doesn’t make you a father.
