Of COURSE my OCD has shown up with this pup. I care about him. I want him to be safe. I want to do a good job. And OCD loves nothing more than something I really care about. There are also a million reasons WHY dogs might feel particularly loaded for me right now. I’ve lost two dogs in really sad, traumatic ways. It’s been about six years of dogs being old, fragile, medically unwell or needing constant care. Somewhere along the way, my brain seems to have learned: dog = something bad might happen. And now I have this little pup who wants to play and steal pizza crusts and just... be a dog. Honestly, I think I’ve forgotten how to do that. How to have a dog around without constantly waiting for impending doom. And I could spend HOURS figuring out why I feel this anxious. The thing is... the whys make sense. But knowing every single reason WHY doesn’t actually help me decide which harness to buy. It doesn’t help me leave him at home while I go to the store. It doesn’t tell me whether he’s comfortable enough, happy enough, safe enough or whether I’m doing a good enough job. At some point, figuring out the WHY just becomes another way of trying to feel certain before I act. So this is me practicing what I preach in real time! Make the reasonable decision. Buy the harness without researching another 47. Reduce the safety behaviours. Leave the house. Resist checking. Let him play. Let MYSELF play with him. And when my brain says, “Yeah, but are you SURE?” Keep moving. Because going around in circles doesn’t make me a better foster dog mom. It just keeps me going around in circles. Breaking the OCD cycle looks much less dramatic than people imagine. Sometimes it looks like buying the harness and going outside to play with the dog.
