@historylovers_001: On September 17, 2006, Nigeria suffered one of the country’s most devastating military aviation tragedies when a Nigerian Air Force Dornier 228-212 crashed in Vande-Ikya, Benue State, while carrying senior military officers from Abuja to the Obudu Cattle Ranch in Cross River State. The officers were travelling to attend the Nigerian Army’s annual Chief of Army Staff conference and retreat. Several of them were also members of a committee established during the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo to consider ways of repositioning and strengthening the Nigerian Army. The aircraft, carrying 18 people, crashed into hilly terrain during its descent, about 29 kilometres northwest of Obudu. Contemporary reports attributed the accident to poor weather conditions, although an investigation was ordered to establish the exact circumstances. Thirteen people lost their lives, including 10 senior Army generals, a lieutenant-colonel, a pilot and another military officer. Five people initially survived the crash, but the co-pilot later died from his injuries, leaving four survivors. Among those killed were some of the Nigerian Army’s most senior officers, including two General Officers Commanding and the Military Secretary. Their deaths represented a major loss to the Nigerian military leadership at a time when the country was undergoing significant military reforms. At the time of the crash, President Olusegun Obasanjo was in Singapore for meetings connected to the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. Following news of the disaster, he cut short his foreign trip and returned to Nigeria. He described the incident as a “monumental national tragedy” and declared three days of national mourning, with flags ordered to fly at half-mast. The fallen officers were later given a national burial with full military honours in Abuja. September 17, 2006, therefore remains a significant date in Nigeria’s military history, a day when the country lost a generation of senior officers in a single aircraft disaster. #Historylovers
