f you’ve ever lived in an abusive relationship, you’ll know what I mean when I say you become incredibly good at reading the room. You notice their footsteps, their face, their tone of voice and even the way they close the door. Sometimes you know within seconds whether it’s going to be a good night or whether you need to hold your breath as you need to be on eggshells. I lived like this for years but I had absolutely no idea what was happening inside my body. I just thought I was too sensitive or somehow not coping very well. What I understand now is that my nervous system was doing exactly what it is designed to do and trying to keep me safe. When you live with someone who is unpredictable, controlling and abusive your nervous system can become incredibly focused on spotting danger. You might feel constantly on edge and find yourself unable to speak, shut down completely or become the peacekeeper who apologises, agrees and does whatever is needed to stop things escalating. These are trauma responses and when you’re living like this day after day, your body can spend far too much time in survival mode. Cortisol is repeatedly being called upon preparing you for what might happen next. Over time, this can affect your sleep, digestion, concentration and immune system and increased inflammation. This is why so many end up with a diagnosis of a chronic illness!! You can feel exhausted, achy, foggy, disconnected from yourself and wonder why you simply don’t feel like you anymore. Yet you still walk out of your front door looking absolutely fine. You can take the children to school, go to work and smile when somebody asks if you’re okay. I know because this was me too. If this is you, I want you to try to stop asking yourself, “What is wrong with me?” and instead get curious about what your nervous system might be trying to protect you from. Notice what happens in your body when you hear that voice, that key in the door or that change in atmosphere. You don’t have to fix anything, just start noticing because understanding why your body is responding the way it is,is the first step towards finding your way back to yourself. #coercivecontrol #narcissist #traumahealing #coercivecontrol #divorce
