For a modulation index 𝜇 < 1, the envelope of the AM signal faithfully follows the message signal, allowing the original information to be recovered through envelope detection. But if the modulation exceeds 1, overmodulation occurs. The envelope no longer represents the message signal, causing envelope detection to produce distortion.
