The Gothic, as a genre, emerged in the mid-eighteenth century, as part of a cultural fascination with a lost, medieval past full of mystery, ghosts, and trauma. But Irish Gothic writers are dealing with a very specific kind of trauma… colonisation and its consequences. Broadly, by the nineteenth century, you get two distinct perspectives within Irish Gothic: The first is that of the Anglo-Irish Protestants. These largely came from a social and political elite whose dominance in Ireland weakened over the course of the nineteenth century. Anglo-Irish Irish Gothic novels therefore tend to deal with themes like decline, ruin, exile, inheritance… The second perspective within Irish Gothic is that of the Catholic majority. While less clearly defined as a single literary tradition, Catholic and Irish nationalist Gothic writers often use horror to critique colonial oppression, rural poverty, famine, land ownership, and the harsh realities of peasant life… In this reading list, I’m going to cover both sides, and stay within the boundaries of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. IRISH GOTHIC TBR (18th-19th centuries)➡️ 🏰 Regina Maria Roche — ‘Clermont’ (1798) 🪦 Charles Robert Maturin — ‘Melmoth the Wanderer’ (1820) 🩸 Thomas Furlong — ‘The Doom of Derenzie’ (1825) 😱 Gerald Griffin — ‘The Brown Man’ (1827) 💀 Sheridan Le Fanu — ‘The House by the Churchyard’ (1863) 👻 Rosa Mulholland — ‘The Ghost at the Rath’ (1886) and ‘The Haunted Organist of  Hurly Burly’ (1891) 🐍 Bram Stoker — ‘The Snakes Pass’ (1890) 🧟 Oscar Wilde — ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ (1890) #BookTok #bookstagram #gothic #irish #tbr
