Yesterday with Michela I rode the Stelvio Pass by bike from the Prato side to the Stelvio, taking advantage of the Stelvio Bike event. Arrived in Passo, I filmed a video that captures the entire valley and those famous turns that, according to many, make this road one of the most beautiful in Europe, or perhaps the most beautiful. I couldn't make the usual post. Or perhaps, upon thinking about it, I didn't want to do it. Because maybe this is art too. A road that is, above all, a jewel of engineering: a long line drawn on the mountain, made of segments that, zigzagging frenetically, build relationships of elevation, depth, and perspective. A geometry that seems impossible, but following the shape of the mountain, ends up merging into the landscape. And then there's the art that nature gives us. In this video I didn't capture the beautiful white glaciers that shone like blades of light embedded in the mountain yesterday. (However, you will find a photo among the comments.) I, on the other hand, let the road tell this place. And that long serpent of cyclists, which slowly climbs up the turns, with no other claim to glory than that of reaching up there, becomes in turn part of the work: a part in motion, movable, colorful, alive. A sort of magical temporary installation, destined to dissolve as soon as the last cyclist has crossed the Pass and the passage of the first machine breaks the spell. Art is not necessarily something that someone has decided to call art, but a feeling, a perception of the moment that your lived experience transforms, within you, into something you recognize as art.
