Salinas is welcoming a wave of new businesses, from fast food chains and car washes to clothing stores and auto parts shops, with several new Starbucks locations among the additions. “Oh, man. That sucks. We got how many more Starbucks that we need, actually, bringing something else. Anything else but Starbucks? I can go, I can walk probably ten blocks in either direction to hit a Starbucks,” said Roy Blanco, a resident. “Mexican restaurants. We have plenty of... more sushi places, maybe. I love frickin sushi” While opinions differ on what businesses the city needs, entrepreneurs are seizing the opportunity to expand. Jose Trendo and his brother, who have operated a popular steakhouse, The Windmill Restaurant, in Soledad for 20 years, are putting the finishing touches on their second location at 1315 North Main Street in Salinas. “There are a lot of restaurants in Salinas, but most of them are franchised restaurants. And there's just a few. The third, they serve the food that we do. So we're looking forward to catering to the community of Salinas,” Trendo said. Family-owned establishments like Trendo’s steakhouse and Brewjee Coffee Company are generating excitement among locals. Windmill plans to open a new location in Salinas in the next couple of weeks, while Brewjee recently opened its second location downtown. “I've seen a lot of little pop-up restaurants, pop-up coffee bars, and things like that, and those are the things I like to see. I mean, that's where we should be spending our money, putting our money back into our community. I mean, yes, Starbucks, they do provide us with grants and things to help out. But ultimately, I want to see it going to the people of Salinas,” said Kai Otto, a resident. Windmill has not announced an exact opening date but plans to open in the coming weeks. Brewjee’s new downtown location is already open for business.
