For a child to know the difference between right and wrong they should know the consequences of the right and wrong. How did you know that a turned on stove can burn you? you got burned or someone told you. How did you know that slapping your mom is wrong? She told you or she spanked you. Every action has a consequence. Levels of disrespect towards a parent vary but most need some discipline. I can understand when a grown adult starts beating a kid like their mad but the purpose of beating your kid is for discipline not hurting them just because you feel like it.

as someone who got spanked as a kid, it didn't teach me anything about right and wrong, it just made me resent my parents and lose trust in them.

replace the child at home with adult at work. is it okay to teach an adult how to do a job by beating them when they do it wrong multiple times? no? Then what do you do? Conversations or repercussions right? that's the same you do for a child in relation to their world simple.

We have literally studied the effects of corporal punishment, and it's not good. If you hit a kid then that's simply a failure on your part.
