@missy23232: Career and interview tips from a talent executive who spent 20+ years on the other side of the table. A candidate asked for 15% more than her agreed-upon salary and lost the offer entirely, so be thoughtful about how you negotiate in a market where backup candidates are lined up. After 20+ years making talent and people decisions at the executive level, I've seen the same mistakes cost great candidates great opportunities. These videos exist so you don't have to learn the hard way. #careertips #careeradvice #professionaldevelopment #workplacetips #jobsearchtips
If they agreed to a BASE number, that’s shady bc there’s always room for negotiation. They clearly dodged a bullet. I would’ve said thank you, I’m excited. Out of curiosity is there room for negotiation on the salary.

Basically that company wanted a low ball employee. Which is a red flag as they'll probably give you a 1% raise every year and expect you to do the work of 3 people. She dodged a red flag right there

I’m currently at $121,000, I applied at a competitor bank and asked for $130,000. They maxed it at $120,000. I declined the offer. I know my worth and why would I leave for the same amount.

Thing is, if I tell you I am looking for 85k-95k and you then say ok the approved budget aligns at 85-100k and you come back with a 85k offer, what do you think I’m going to do? And how do you look as a corporation?

Rescinding because of one negotiation is wild. They could have just said, “We’re offering the agreed upon amount and we aren’t willing to negotiate at this time.” That behavior tells me they never really wanted that person enough. And telling them they’re greedy?! Come on. We’re all taught to negotiate by recruiters and hiring managers. I’m glad you’re sharing this story because it shows how wild hiring managers are right now.

say you have the perfect candidate for a position. They check every box, they exceed credentials, and vibed very well with the team. But they brought as iced coffee to the interview. What would you do?

I applied for a job where the salary posted was $70K-$115. My initial offer was $75K and I felt like an as*hole asking for $90K. But I hate that the range was so high and I thought, there’s more on the table right? It’s such a tough thing to navigate

Accepted an offer- went through the background check process and a discrepancy was flagged: my job title from my previous job, I listed it as my offer letter had it and my previous job listed it differently. I was told I was under investigation and to clarify the discrepancy- I did and submitted supporting docs. Then I had to get on a video call to discuss and then they mentioned my work gap - which was not an issue on the report. I’m a stay at home getting back into the workplace. Now my clarification email etc and notes from that meeting are being sent to an adjudication board to decide if I can work for the company or not. Even though I did well in the interview etc.

Sorry, disagree here. Initial salary is just that. After you learn about the job and scope, the salary requirement is subject to change. Obviously within reason, but if a counter offer is founded in fact, not entertaining it is wild and a red flag IMO.

so what’s the move? mention the final number from the get go, ask if the offer is negotiable? How is asking more is looked as greedy while lowballing is not?

It’s rare for a recruiter to agree to a fix salary before other interviews. And for the recruiter to pull the offer just for respectfully negotiating seems suspect. Red flag 🚩 for company

Received an offer but the benefits package was a bit lacking. I initially declined then they asked me what number I’d be comfortable with. They could not meet me there. Now 6 weeks later they have reached back out.

I could hear my husband in a Zoom interview go back and forth about the pay with the hiring manager. I instantly knew he would be rejected. And he was.

This is an Employer market. Asking for 15% is crazy especially when they were upfront about their range.

Salary negotiation should happen before you sign an offer letter! 😭

You should never have to commit to to a salary before you even go through the interview process to see what the job fully entails.

I hate that there’s this stigma of looking “greedy” like we all want more money, why do we need to pretend that’s not why we’re all here? If you can’t give that, just say it and let the candidate decide if they’re okay with it

In this economy? I didn’t negotiate and won’t until this market turns a bit more in candidate favor

That’s why ask for the benefits when I get the salary offer. Cause then I compare medical and 401k stuff and use that as my basis as to why I’m asking for more. Usually it’s been 5-10k. When I give them the math they agree.

I will say as someone in HR if they had only asked for maybe 4% more that would have been more reasonable, but 15% is unheard of

I took your advice from another interview, simply asked if the number was flexible..to gauge. When I got on the phone with the recruiter, she’d already talked to the hiring manager, and gave me top of the range & even thanked me for negotiating.

Good companies will offer you the high end of the range you say you’re looking for

As a recruiter, 15% is way too big of an ask. Especially when you already agreed to the range six weeks ago. An extra 5k? Sure but beyond that is risky in this market. And yes, always backup candidates
