my ex was the exact same way. he LOVED to get me a gift/dinner/favor because then he could yap about it non stop for the next 3 weeks and make constant comments about how expensive it was, how dumb or unnecessary it was, how I ask for so much etc etc. he'd even get me things unprompted that i didn't ask for just so he could hold it over my head.

I got my boyfriend two simple gifts last year. About three weeks before Xmas I bought clothes for him online as well as sneakers. I knew he needed new clothes and instead of waiting for him to buy it after Xmas I bought it for him. When he saw I got him presents (all packed in two boxes) he panicked since he wasn't planning on getting me anything (we don't really celebrate Xmas, but his relatives do). He asked me what I wanted so I said it could be anything he wants to get me, I'm not picky. He didn't look convinced so I told him that an Amazon or Starbucks gift card would be great, since spending that there (a luxury and not a necessity) would be a treat for me. I never gave an amount. I told him where he can buy them, two blocks from the house. Near Xmas he kept saying he didn't know how to buy a gift card (I guess he couldn't ask at a store) and if he just gave me cash I'd spend it all in one place instead of stretching it. 😏 wtf That's why it's a gift, to spend it on what I want, when I want?! I told him to not give me anything. My gift for him was something I wanted to do, no one forced me to get those things for him.

Every year I would put sooooo much thought and effort into buying Xmas gifts for my ex ( we were together 11 years) and every year he would just give me cash. Even though I would literally tell him several things he could pick from to get me but he never put in any effort at all

This is like the old I thought about getting you this gift but they never got it for you and they want credit. Or I was gonna pick you this up today but I forgot and they want credit for that. It just makes them bad partners and you deserve better
