Our brains have a negativity bias. It’s a built-in mechanism designed to keep us from repeating harmful mistakes. It helps us remember the bad things better than the good things, because the bad things are dangerous. This can make it really difficult to do a bunch of stuff, from noticing the basic goodness we have in our days to recognizing our personal growth and accomplishments. I so often hear from clients that they “haven’t accomplished anything”. And I love taking my notes out and recounting to them all of the incredible accomplishments they have made along the journey. Perceptions changed. AHA moments. Reactions that are new. Emotions that are being felt. Boundaries that are being set. It’s beautiful. But only if you pay attention. I invite you to try making a list of everything you’ve accomplished today, in spite of whatever barriers you are facing. EVERYTHING, I said. Include SHOWER. Include BRUSHED TEETH. Include ATE EGGS. And also, include… SAID NO THANKS TO A FUNCTION I DIDN’T WANT TO ATTEND. DECLINED TO ANSWER A QUESTION THAT MADE ME FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE.
