Before Van Gogh became famous for his iconic swirls and bold colors, he was deeply inspired by Jean-François Millet. Millet painted everyday farm workers with the same honor and respect usually saved for heroes, turning simple tasks like planting seeds or resting into powerful art. Van Gogh studied Millet’s work his entire life. Millet’s style heavily shaped Van Gogh’s early art in the Netherlands—like The Potato Eaters—as he tried to capture the real, raw lives of working-class people. In 1889 and 1890, while staying at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh created 21 paintings based on Millet's work. He didn't have the original paintings—only black-and-white prints. He remade classics like The Sower, First Steps, and The Siesta, comparing the process to a musician playing someone else's song. He called them "translations," not copies. The layout stayed Millet's, but the feelings became pure Van Gogh. Quiet fields turned bright yellow and blue, skies came alive, and bold brushstrokes gave the ground energy. Van Gogh never hid this influence; he simply took art he loved and translated it into his own signature style. #VanGogh #ArtHistory #LearnOnTikTok #Paintings #ArtStory #ArtistLife #TikTokArt
