On my first day moving into the new apartment, my neighbour warned me: “If you hear knocking on the wall at night, don’t respond.” I smiled and asked: “Why?” He said: “Because it isn’t knocking on the wall.” I paid no heed to his words. That first night, at 2 a.m., a sound came from my bedroom wall. Thud. Thud. It sounded as if someone was tapping from the next room. I tapped back. The noise stopped instantly. Seconds later, a voice came from the other side of the wall: “Why did you answer me?” I froze. The next day, I went to ask the property management. The staff told me: “No one lives next door to you. That apartment has been empty for eight years.” That night, I pressed my ear against the wall. There was complete silence. I let out a sigh of relief. Just as I was about to go to bed, an unknown text message popped up on my phone: “Stop tapping the wall. He has found out you are there.” I turned to look at the wall. A new crack had appeared on it.
