I would say I’m similar in a way. Was a huge incel and fat as F. Almost pushing 360lbs. Then one day last year I decided to eat healthy. Then go to the gym. If I didn’t do that my mental wouldn’t have been prepared me for being laid off back in oct 25’. Was unemployed for 7 months. Lost 70lbs and still going strong! Going out and just enjoying life

I saw this change happen when a friend of mine saved up for a bearded dragon, a pet he's wanted since he was a child. Bros genuinely more happy now and gets more sleep so he can wake up on time to take care of his lizard. Every time I talk to him, I ask him ab the dragon, if only for him to info dump or show photos. I'm so happy this bearded dragon gives him life

this actually happened to me because of my dog. I wasnt an incel but I was suicidally depressed, and didnt take care of myself. got a new puppy. got in an argument with my sister. it was her fault, I ran from home. eventually I showed up back home my dog looked me in my eyes. and in that moment I saw a complete stranger in his eyes. he looked at me like I was the entire universe. and in that moment I decided I had to be who he saw me as. now 5 years later Im married and have a kid.

I’m a very nervous person, but it’s really important that I socialize my dog properly so we go on long walks and he has favorite coffee, shops and people and it helps me make friends because people love to interact with him. I make most of my friends because of my dog. He was very anxious about strangers when I first got him and now he’s shy, but he’s not aggressive. My dog is good for my social skills.

This is beautiful. I wouldn’t say I was ever an incel but I was certainly heading down that road. Without getting into details I suffered a lot of abuse and neglect in my childhood and was a very angry weird kid in school. No one wanted to be around me. Was blaming everyone else for everything instead of reflecting and realizing that I’m responsible for my actions (self reflection took a while longer to come about). Up until the age of 21 I never actually had any real friends or anything just people who tolerated me. I got heavily into MTG and there was a club in my community college for it so I joined, and being able to hang out with a bunch of people who I shared this common interest opened my eyes a bit to how my anger and shittiness contributed heavily into isolating me from everyone else. This was over a decade ago and I am such a different person from how I used to be and I am so thankful that joining that club helped me to get my head out of my ass

So much of this generations “mental health crisis” is just this. People with no genuine interests or goals, and they only get better when they have a genuine hobby and goals. Same thing happened to me

I've got a wife and kid, very happy with both. but I have been thinking about getting some shrimp, like really little ones so I can have a small tank and make a tiny environment.

It is honestly wild to me how many people will talk about fictional characters that are literal serial killers or doea or genocide and be like 'But they have a sad back story so I empathize' then look at actual human beings whose worst crime is having no self smeateem and handling depression by being an asshat, and go 'well thats an irredeemably black hole of humanity'

And that’s the magic of animal husbandry. Knowing there is something, however small, relying on you to be there and be able to provide for them. My dear late crested gecko Zen got me through some insanely hard times because I refused to fail him. I stay around now for my two lovely cats despite agonizing chronic illness. Animal companionship and what it brings is so, so important to me.
