American history has a long tradition of non-Native families claiming a "Cherokee grandmother" a phenomenon historians call the Cherokee Princess myth. But behind the family lore lies a legacy of state-sanctioned land fraud. Under the Dawes Act of 1887, the U.S. government forcibly broke up communally held tribal lands to sell off "surplus" acres. To receive a land allotment along with lucrative oil, timber, and mineral rights you had to be listed on federal censuses known as the Dawes Rolls. That land rush created massive corruption: The $5 Bribe: White squatters and land speculators routinely paid field agents around $5 (about $150 today) to insert fake names onto the rolls. Fabricated Records: Attorneys built entire businesses forging affidavits to secure land titles for non-Native families. Permanent Paper Trails: Millions of acres were stolen, permanently corrupting federal census records. Why does this matter today? Sovereign nations like the Cherokee Nation were legally forced to base modern citizenship on lineal descent from those exact Dawes Rolls. This means legal enrollment can exist entirely separate from blood quantum, cultural ties, or community participation. Markwayne Mullin is a documented, legally enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation. But enrollment alone doesn't equal cultural alignment. When a public figure relies on "cheekbones" and geographic proximity rather than language, ceremony, or sovereignty while overseeing federal immigration enforcement it highlights a stark evolution. A century ago, buying onto tribal rolls bought stolen land. Today, leveraging those paper trails buys political legitimacy at the highest levels of government. Same hustle, higher stakes. #markwaynemullin #5dollarindians #cherokee #dawesroll #nativetiktok
