What about tower stairs? I know they were made clockwise so if you are up and right handed you can tuck behind the center pillar and the one from below has the pillar it the swords way

If I had to defend a stairway in like a castle or something I'd probably give the defenders spears. That covers up all the weaknesses of the sword in that scenario.
