$I’ve been digging into the Elizabeth Lynn Crow and Jacob Neal case, and honestly, the more I read, the harder it is to understand how this little boy got to the condition he was in. On August 26, police were contacted after a 9 year old boy was brought to IU Health Frankfort and found to be severely malnourished and seriously injured. He was eventually transferred to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis in critical condition. According to investigators, the injuries and medical problems they documented were extensive. His ribs were reportedly visible, and doctors documented bruising, multiple fractures, open wounds, broken teeth, bedsores and other serious medical issues. He was also reportedly suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding and a fungal lung infection. And then there are the allegations surrounding food. Investigators say the boy had been denied food as a form of punishment. Police reportedly found messages between Jacob Neal and Elizabeth Lynn Crow discussing the child, including conversations about food and punishment. Investigators allege that the boy was punished for eating and was repeatedly asking for food. There were also different explanations given for some of his injuries. Investigators say Neal reported that the child had fallen while climbing a bookshelf, while Crow reportedly gave another explanation involving a fall from a swing. Doctors reportedly determined that those explanations did not explain the extent of the injuries they found. What really stands out to me is that investigators say there were other children in the home as well. DCS became involved and removed the other children, who police said were found to be in good health. And there is another detail that I think people need to know. Crow was reportedly already out on bond in a separate child neglect case when all of this happened. After her arrest in this case, that previous bond was revoked. Neal and Crow were arrested September 17 and are facing Level 3 felony neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. This little boy was 9 years old. Nine. He should have been worrying about school, playing with his friends, eating dinner, getting ready for bed and being a kid. Instead, investigators are describing a child who was being denied food, severely malnourished and suffering from injuries serious enough to put him in critical condition. There are still a lot of questions I have about this case, especially how long this was allegedly going on, what other people may have known, and how a child could become this severely malnourished and injured before getting the help he needed.
