I think people are giving Obsession way more credit than it deserves. It’s a very classic and straight forward «The Real Horror Is Man» + «Be careful what you wish for» horror movie. And while it does those tropes well, I really don’t think it subverts them in any meaningful way. Nothing about it felt subversive or unexpected, imo.

I am suspicious you haven’t read the book. His wife rises from the dead and tries to kill him. Hence why he is barricaded inside his house and hunting down his vampire neighbours during the day as they try to hunt him at night.

I had a convo about this movie with a younger man at work and I realized that from the male perspective Nikki is what men are terrified of: clingy, obsessive girls doing “crazy girl shit” (his words) but from my perspective as a woman (& another woman in the office) the truly horrific thing is how Bear takes away Nikki’s autonomy and even when he realizes what he’s done he still doesn’t care: he prioritizes his desires over hers which ultimately leads to the ruin of both of them. A tale as old as time: men do that everyday to women and they don’t care. I hope I opened his eyes on the subject but I doubt it.

It’s even hinted at that Bear is a bad person at the beginning of the movie, he left the pills out and the cat got into them, and for a cat he supposedly cared about, instead of burying it after it dies he simply throws it in the trash

I want a census of how many people ACTUALLY clocked Bear as a "good person" or a "good guy" more than 3-5min into that movie. I swear nobody I have spoken about the movie saw him as such and many in the comments say more or less the same. So, if the intention was to makes us see him as "good" for more than 5min, they failed, miserably. Reason why I would like to know if there's a number that would make it realistic that idea that Bear seems good for more than 5min into that movie.

I loved I am legend, but I can never see the MC as the bad guy. If a disease transformed everyone I know and changed them physically and psychologically, I would act exactly the same.
