MAF-related codes may include P0101, P0102, or P0103; throttle body codes depend on the system used. 🟠 Struggles uphill: A worn fuel pump may not deliver enough fuel when engine demand increases. A restricted fuel filter further limits the supply, and a faulty regulator can cause fuel pressure to fall outside specifications. Vehicles that monitor fuel pressure may display P0087 for excessively low fuel pressure or P0191 for a fuel pressure sensor range/performance issue. 🔵 Jerks during acceleration: Worn or fouled spark plugs can cause misfires as engine load increases. An ignition coil producing a weak spark can also cause misfires, while injectors with uneven flow or poor spray patterns can disrupt combustion. Common codes include P0300 for random misfires and P0301–P0308 for specific cylinders, depending on the engine. 🟢 Feels sluggish: A partially clogged catalytic converter can increase exhaust backpressure and limit the engine’s ability to expel exhaust gases. An O2 sensor sending an incorrect signal can affect fuel corrections, and an exhaust system problem can increase restriction. P0420 or P0430 may indicate a catalyst efficiency issue, although these codes alone do not confirm a physical blockage. 🟣 RPM rises without a corresponding increase in speed: When engine RPM increases but vehicle speed does not rise proportionally, there may be slippage in the drivetrain. In a manual transmission, a worn clutch can slip. In an automatic, the torque converter or the transmission itself may experience slippage. Possible codes include P0730 for an incorrect gear ratio or P0741/P0744 related to torque converter clutch operation, depending on the vehicle. 🔵 Check Engine light comes on: An inaccurate MAF reading can affect air and fuel calculations, a faulty O2 sensor can affect mixture corrections, and an incorrect ECT reading can change the engine’s operating strategy. Depending on the fault, codes may include P0101–P0103, P0130–P0135, or P0115–P0118, among other related codes. Properly diagnosing a loss of power requires identifying the conditions in which it occurs and checking MAF readings, fuel trims, fuel pressure, misfire data, and engine temperature. If RPM rises without a proportional increase in vehicle speed, possible clutch or transmission slippage should also be checked before replacing sensors.
