In Islam, we need to understand the difference between zina itself and actions that may lead toward zina. Zina refers to an unlawful sexual relationship between a man and a woman who are not married to each other. Therefore, hugging someone of the opposite gender does not mean that a person has committed zina in the legal sense of the word. However, Islam also teaches Muslims to maintain boundaries with those who are non-mahram. Physical contact such as hugging a non-mahram person is generally considered impermissible by many Islamic scholars, particularly when there is desire or when it is done outside a genuine necessity. Allah ﷻ says: «“And do not approach zina. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and an evil way.” — Qur’an 17:32» Notice that Allah says “do not approach zina”—not merely “do not commit zina.” Islam therefore teaches us to stay away from paths and situations that can lead toward greater sins. The Prophet ﷺ also taught Muslims modesty and proper boundaries between men and women who are not mahram to one another. So, if you have hugged a non-mahram person, do not label yourself as someone who committed zina. Instead, recognize the mistake, repent sincerely to Allah, and try to maintain better boundaries in the future.
