Johnny Marr's Rickenbacker Model 330 in Jetglo sold for £358,400, making it one of the top lots in Marr's Guitars: The Johnny Marr Auction, with half the sale still to go. The first guitar Marr became closely associated with, the Rickenbacker helped shape a more melodic style of playing built around chord changes and hooks — and, as Marr recalls, sometimes pushed his playing into something faster and more hyperactive. Its sound can be heard unmistakably on the intro to The Smiths’ ‘What Difference Does It Make?’ and 'This Charming Man'. Marr continued to return to the guitar throughout his career, and it even appears on the cover of Oasis’s ‘Supersonic’ single. It sold this afternoon at Christie’s London.
