APA 7th edition does not require you to list all authors the first time you cite them. That was the 6th edition.

That's what my supervisor said at first include all their names then after that you can use et al

I beg to differ Dr. It would be an injustice to rule in that instance that the student used AI. Human beings are just animals of habit, and it’s really easier to say et al instead of listing all 5/6 authors. I’m really guilty of this too.

It's a good thing I download all my sources as pdf files for backup. Those that I can't download, I securely save the links. What do you mean by if they use et al. isn't et al used to reference more than 2 authors in APA7? I'm confused

I respect you professor, but this is no longer 1900, the APA 7th edition, will use et al, I will give you with et al and show you the referencing manager like mendeley where the reference is.

My university/faculty does not require that we write the reference in full at first use.

There are papers written by over 200 authors out there, what happens then? 🤣🤣🤣 I'm glad my faculty doesn't require this, the first sentence in the intro can be "According to Mthoko et al..." and that's completely fine 😂😂😂

I don't totally agree with this.... you are right about the referencing thing but that is a very weak subjective proof for the use of AI...some people don't know they are expected to write the full names when citing the first in their work

APA 7th edition, use et al. in every in-text citation (including the very first one) for any source with three or more authors.

Not all referencing styles require this naming.

I think you’re wrong here; I use endnote APA referencing and if a paper has more than one author the citation comes with et al doesn’t matter whether you’re citing the paper for the first time.

My university uses the OBU Harvard referencing style, which states that as soon as you hit 4 authors, you should add et al. So what are you talking about, Dr.?

The rule (most of the time) more than 3 authors, you use et al. I think there are other more reliable tells for use of AI.

But this is incorrect assumption we have been using et al and sometimes it just a mistake

Is’t not dangerous to assume?

I dont understand your reasoning? the document underpinning my statement has more than 2 authors hence et al.

Did you say "assume"?? APA 7 doesn't require that.
Even with others such as Chicago, when authors are more than a certain number, you don't have to list them all. please clarify your information
