Martin Luther called the book of James a epistle of straw … and he wanted to remove it from the Bible along with other books such as the book of Revelation.. books that “contradicted” his beliefs 🤔

James is explaining that works is how you identify a true Christian. the Catholic denomination teaches that you must do works to maintain your salvation. this os a false gospel. when you receive true salvation you are going to heaven regardless of what works you do. this guy is teaching you a false gospel. @𝘋𝘪𝘯𝘹 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘵 is telling you the truth. please don't be deceived by this false teachings.

Hopefully we can get a chance to conversate about this subject. My two cents while writing a paper on the matter: I believe that sola fide and a fide formata type of justification are aspectivalistic in manner of understanding the formal justification of man rather meritorious or non-meritorious. So in the same way one could say "Sacred scripture is of the highest authority" yet maintain there is also another infallible authority to impart norms without compartmentalizing this and God. Such could be said of the forms of justification. However, Dinx is at odds with classical Protestants on sola fide as well

The key is that saving faith isn’t merely intellectual assent or external evidence. It unites us to Christ. Calvin called this union with Christ while Lutherans can speak of it as Christification. We are justified by faith alone but the Christ we receive through faith transforms us so that faith necessarily becomes active in love and obedience. In that sense there’s even a point of contact with the Eastern Orthodox emphasis on theosis while important differences remain.

For it is by grace through faith you have been saved and not by works so that no man may boast. We know God is not a god of confusion, so Paul and James aren’t contradicting each other. Rather, James tells us that a living faith will produce works and we can know who has this faith by said works. Works are a byproduct of faith. We are told that our works are as rags. Our works are trash without Christ. It is only by faith, a gift from God, that we are able to do good works. Now, I will disagree with some of my fellow Protestants and I will say we are commanded to do works. We are commanded to go and baptize. We are commanded to be baptized. We are commanded to love our neighbor and, most importantly, our God. So Protestants who say you can say a prayer and continue on are completely wrong. We are new creations in Christ. If we look and act like our old selves then we are not saved. Faith and works are not opposites like some of my fellow Protestants will claim. I think if we say we can just do lip service and be saved then we are foolish. If we say we must do something to earn our salvation we are prideful. (Going off in the weeds a bit here), I think us Protestants have a contorted view of what the Orthodox and Catholics call works and I think the Orthodox and Catholics have a contorted view of what we mean by Faith Alone. Short story long, we should listen to our other Christian brothers before we make judgements about their/our positions and we get too caught up in slapping a descriptor on everything. At the end of the day, we work until we are called Home. God help us be better today than we were yesterday and better tomorrow than we are today.

I find it so odd that people on either side argue for faith alone or works alone for salvation. As a Protestant myself, this is something I wrestle with, in that they both are an overarching “middle ground” (for lack of a better word) of what our salvation entails. They both are equally a product of our salvation, and also salvific in nature. (This is my attempt to understand) if there are corrections, I’m open to them!

There are people who genuinely think that those who deny faith alone aren’t saved… so then… salvation is by faith alone… in faith alone, it’s a paradox, it’s no longer faith alone in Christ alone it’s faith in Christ plus the doctrine of faith alone, so then, faith alone is not faith alone anymore but then it is but isn’t but… yesss but nooo but yes but no but yes but no but yes but no while no while yes while simultaneously yes… what are we doing man, Lord have mercy

The only works of ours that plays a part in salvation is our actual sin that required a savior to reconcile us to God. Belief is a work of God so we are left with filthy rags that we call righteous deeds. I don’t know about you, but I am going to rest in his work, not mine. Peace to you and blessings, brother.

There are a lots of parts of doctrine that has changed and many leaders and believers that have struggled with scripture. It’s too bad that we are no longer willing to work together to grow. One of my favorite teachers is you, but I also love listening to Dinx. But I’m not the sharpest, I need all the text to learn and leaders and teachers to understand and grow.

When James asks if whether a workless faith can save someone or not, the expected answer is no. Because there is no way of measuring salvation through some "works balance sheet", reading James through the lens of sola fide means that works serve primarily as "visible evidence to others" since, God already knows your heart. I would argue that works are both the fruit and the fuel that make faith grow: they are simultaneously the evidence and the requirement of a living faith.
