It’s about a kid learning how to cope with the world and his raw emotions. He ran away because his mom and dad were separating emotionally, his sister was drifting away from him, and he thought by being a king and could control everything that the world would be a better place. He had fun for awhile but realized that no matter how much control he had, it still wasn’t enough to satisfy all of his emotions. He still felt sad, anxious, angry, fear.. each character represented him and his thoughts/ emotions. Through them he was able to learn to let go, and realize that yes the world can be cruel, sad, and make you feel lonely- but not to neglect the love that has been provided at home. Which is why he ran to his mother- who made him a warm meal. That.. was a pivotal moment for both the mom and child

So many people are saying this movie scared them and then there are those saying they wish it was them. This movie was made for the audience wishing they had a different life. Different parents, different siblings, a better change to grow up and be normal. I loved this movie as a kid, I understood max so much.

I always understood this movie, a boy don’t feel at home at home, so he “runs away” into his imagination, with people who care for him, but eventually, even in your own thoughts, you can’t feel at home

The desperate need to be wanted, the crushing fear that people will turn around and rip you apart for getting the smallest thing wrong, the isolation of loneliness. This movie had me beyond existential as a kid, it’s fantastic.
