@ritchshydner: When the 1950’s revolution created a rise in an extemporaneous, conversational style of stand-up, it was usually accompanied by lessening in the physicality. Robin was able to maximize both. #standupcomedy, #History, #RobinWilliams, #improvisation
Robin controlled the audience. It is amazing how he grabbed the attention and never let go.

The ONLY ONE :
I’ve been trying to figure out, WHAT MAKES people laugh.
Not “ What is funny?”
Because being funny doesn’t necessarily MAKE people laugh.
.
It changes from country to country and culture to culture.
But in America; the top two things that MAKE people laugh are;
1-Character voices.
Watch any Impressionist being interviewed on any podcast. The guy will just be doing a voice…not saying anything funny….and the Host will be giggling nonstop.
Characters, make people giggle. The harder you commit to the character, the harder they laugh. They can’t help it.
.
Robin Williams would launch into nonstop characters, one after another.
.
2- Improvising.
The audience THINKS that they can tell, when a Comic is telling a pre-written joke, and when they are making it up , in the moment.
And if the audience thinks you are improvising, they are much more likely to give up a laugh.
This is why Crowd-work is so effective.
.
So a guy like Robin Williams, whose gift was making everything he said SEEM like he just made it up, and launching into character voice after voice , was an unstoppable laugh-getting machine.
