I think the whole series is him avoiding crying the way he does when he embraces the man who feels invisible in the last episode.

as someone with CPTSD I find Don’s struggles so relatable. His storyline with Anna Draper made me cry. She says something like “I know everything about you and I still love you”

I appreciate this analysis and I’m curious how you would layer in the strain of class: Don grows up poor and to me that’s the core of his artifice and friction. He can’t be affluent and authentic at the same time, and when he finally tries with Hershey, his whole life falls apart

That final music is “caravan”, a song about being in a foreign land at night- even as he’s driving “home”. That show is layers and layers of depth

Don, on this scene, is supposed to charm her adter he was dismissive and rude to her but the conversation they had is so far removed from him being charming that it doesn’t make sense why she went back. However, it could be that his sadness attracted her

I agree on panic attack. I do think high functioning cptsd as diagnosis.

I don’t think you’re wrong. But I didn’t think that’s the case. Like most pilots, it just wasn’t written very well or with the whole character in mind. Pilots often aren’t good or consistent with the show. Why didn’t Don prepare for the meeting? Why was there a psychologist who never appeared again? Why was Sal so obvious and flamboyant?

I’m convinced (and have read in many forums) that Rachel was the only woman he had relations with that actually saw him for him. The moment he wanted to run away with her and she turned him down, Don met his match. She had the same outlook on life as he did. The only women he truly loved were Sally, Anna, and Peggy. However I know he probably lived the rest of his live remembering Rachel

I always deeply related to don existing in this world he climbed to and leaving a past behind, not being of his past anymore but resenting those around him. He used it as justification for his abhorrent treatment of women (which I don’t relate to or agree with), but I find the other stuff is very much what its like finally reaching comfort and having no idea how to exist within it or the people you surrounded yourself with. Its not imposter syndrome because you’re not worried you dont belong, you KNOW you dont belong, its a fact and you demand to be in the room anyway. Thats why he related to peggy, she wasnt an ivy brat like ken or pete (or the others) and she demanded a spot in the room. He clearly has a combo of ptsd & cptsd, along with a lot of confirmation bias about the ugliness of the world plus he is a total narcissist which is why instead of finding kinship with those he relates to (exception is peggy) he discards them.

Oh Dr. B. so glad you are here! I believe Don is borderline; there are so many clues! Most important is Matthew Weiner, the creator of Mad Men, worked on The Sopranos before mad men. The Sopranos has so much psychological depth! So I think Don Draper is the male equivalent of Gloria Trillo, a diagnosed borderline who unalived.
