Only a year late but come on in 👀 & welcome to the Sultan Bayezid II Health Complex in Edirne 🇹🇷 built in 1488… (don’t mind the chaoticness of the vlog lol) Academia often presents knowledge as though it originated in Europe particularly in psychology which reinforces a deeply Eurocentric narrative about where “science” etc began, however the historical record tells a very different story! While parts of Europe were still debating how to treat people experiencing mental distress (& spoiler alert: not great 🙃), institutions across Muslim regions were operating sophisticated hospitals known as Dar al-shifa - or Bimaristan in Farsi (land/home/place of the sick) These were not primitive infirmaries but rather these were fully functioning hospitals & medical schools. Physical & psychiatric care were delivered under the same roof & students trained on site through structured clinical teaching. Physicians were salaried, wards were organised & treatment were documented. Essentially, care here was systematic. Long before psychiatry emerged as a formal discipline in Europe, holistic models of mental health were already embedded within these institutions. And the treatment plan… NOT lock them away. We’re talking: (1) Music therapy using specific maqams as well as water & sensory therapy. (2) Intentional architecture e.g., courtyard fountains designed to calm the nervous system as well as light, symmetry, airflow & acoustics built into the architecture (3) A holistic understanding that mind and body are connected. Dignity for the patient at the forefront. Healthcare was free, funded through a waqf (charitable endowment), meaning this was public responsibility. It was open to anyone of any background! The complex included a mosque, medical school, hospital, kitchens, essentially a 15th-century integrated healthcare campus. These hospitals developed in the 8th century onwards in countries like Iraq, Syria, Egypt and so on and so forth & spread from Al Andalus to India, where they were already combining medicine, architecture, music & public welfare into a system. #healthcare #hospital #History
