THE 1971 SYLMAR EARTHQUAKE: THE DISASTER THAT CHANGED LOS ANGELES 💥🌴🎞️ At almost exactly 6:00 AM on February 9, 1971, Los Angeles woke up to one of the most destructive earthquakes in its modern history. A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck near the northern San Fernando Valley, shaking Southern California and causing catastrophic damage across Sylmar, San Fernando, the San Fernando Valley and surrounding communities. Known as both the 1971 San Fernando earthquake and Sylmar earthquake, the disaster killed dozens of people, injured more than 2,000 and caused more than $500 million in damage at the time. And the destruction was staggering. Hospitals suffered catastrophic failures. Freeway overpasses collapsed. Homes were damaged by violent shaking and surface fault rupture. Utilities and roads were disrupted. At the San Fernando Veterans Administration Hospital, two buildings were destroyed and 49 people were killed. Nearby Olive View Hospital, which had only recently opened, suffered extraordinary structural damage. Several five-story wings pulled away from the main building and three toppled. Then there was the Lower Van Norman Dam. The earthquake severely damaged the dam above the San Fernando Valley and brought it dangerously close to failure. With thousands of people living downstream, authorities ordered a massive evacuation while reservoir levels were lowered. Approximately 80,000 residents evacuated. This archival film takes us directly into that world. Emergency crews. Collapsed structures. Damaged hospitals. Broken roads. Firefighters and first responders. Neighborhoods surveying the destruction. Government agencies trying to understand what had just happened. It is an incredible time capsule of Los Angeles in 1971, but it also documents an earthquake that fundamentally changed how California thought about seismic safety. The disaster exposed serious weaknesses in hospitals, buildings, freeway infrastructure, dams and development near active faults. California responded with major reforms. The Hospital Seismic Safety Act of 1972 established stronger seismic requirements for hospitals. The Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Fault Zoning Act addressed construction near active surface faults. The disaster also helped build momentum for a national earthquake research program. In other words, some of the earthquake-safety rules Californians live with today can be traced directly back to what happened in the San Fernando Valley in 1971. And there was another warning after the main shock. More than 200 aftershocks of magnitude 3 or greater occurred during the following month. That is what makes footage like this so fascinating. It isn’t simply dramatic footage of an old Los Angeles earthquake. It captures a disaster that changed California building codes, hospital safety, earthquake engineering, emergency planning and how Los Angeles prepares for the next major earthquake. 🎞️ WATCH THE FULL ARCHIVAL FILM! ▶️ Watch “The 1971 Sylmar Earthquake” in full on the LA Explained YouTube channel: youtube.com/@LAEXPLAINED Link in bio! Happy Thursday 🥹💗 I’m just feeling so happy and content in life right now that it’s actually a little overwhelming 🥹 Between It Is What It Is with Aisling, producing podcasts for GoLoud, being on breakfast radio and getting the most amazing feedback, while also just feeling genuinely happy in my personal life, I feel so incredibly lucky. I know I’ve been a little quieter on socials lately, but it’s simply because life has been BUSY 😂 In the best possible way. To every single person who tunes in, listens to the podcasts, sends a message, shares something or has supported me over the last couple of years in my career, thank you ❤️ I notice it all and I never take any of it for granted. Just feeling very grateful for where I am right now 🥹✨ #FYP #Grateful #HappyThursday #Content #LifeLately
