What if that is in fact a clone of Hal that got shot and left at the stadium? Maybe after Hal was released from prison, he was targeted by the guys from Rushville that were loyal to Macon/Zoe, including Noah. They kidnap Hal and clone him using the alien technology that Zoe left behind. They killed the clone to lure the green lanterns and John Stewart for revenge. John gets arrested after lighting the Green Lantern signal and fighting Macon’s guys, thus Gardner shows up. John’s giving an opportunity to solve the mystery of Hal’s murder and has to put on the ring to do it. Maybe the third person in that scene on the yellow planet is Guy. John knows that the guardians have a massive cover-up, which is why he goes to see Sinestro, also to find out what he told Hal. John learns Hal’s backstory of what happened when he had to take down Sinestro.
