We didn’t visit these cafés for the drinks (though those were great too). We came for the atmosphere, the furniture, the quiet design choices that made us want to stay a little longer. In a city bursting with energy, where scooters hum like background music and the humidity makes the air feel thick with life, these were the spaces that let us exhale. Each café we visited wasn’t just a stop on a caffeine tour—it was a masterclass in mood, material, and memory. As designers, we’re used to being tuned into the tiniest details: the grain of a wooden table, the alignment of tiles, the interplay between natural light and texture. In Saigon, a city known for its contrasts, these cafés offered balance—between function and feeling, past and present, chaos and calm. Here’s a slow walkthrough of five design-forward cafés that left an impression on more than just our tastebuds. hai cai tay cafe Tucked away in a quiet alley, hai cai tay café doesn’t scream for attention. It hums, gently. The bones of the building are distinctly Vietnamese—arched doorways, weathered walls, French colonial leftovers—but they’ve been treated with a reverent eye. The first thing we noticed was the restraint. No neon signage. No overly curated shelfies. Just warm lighting, timeworn textures, and a few honest materials doing all the talking. Teak wood chairs rubbed soft with age. Bakes Pasteur Bakes Pasteur is what happens when you give a pastry chef an architect’s budget. A bakery-café hybrid in the heart of the city, this space is what most cafés on Pinterest wish they were. Clean, light-filled, effortlessly styled—but not in a soulless, sterile way. The branding is considered and consistent—from the muted color palette of the walls to the wrapping paper that hugs their butter-laminated croissants. Typography? Spot on. Sans serif with just enough flair to feel heritage without feeling dusty. 1996 Space and Coffee 1996 Space and Coffee feels like a love letter to Saigon—written by someone born in the '90s, raised on mixtapes, and still sentimental about brick walls and fluorescent lights. The space is moody, raw, and confidently unpolished. We walked in and immediately felt the contrast: dark concrete floors, exposed beams, scattered greenery, and an eclectic mix of vintage chairs that felt like they were thrifted with intention. There’s something beautifully chaotic about the place—like a teenager’s bedroom turned gallery space. XLIII Specialty Coffee XLIII (that’s 43 in Roman numerals, because why not) is what happens when design minimalism meets serious coffee nerdery. Every inch of this café is intentional. If hai cai tay whispered, XLIII speaks in soft, architectural language—minimalist, geometric, uncompromising. The entrance alone sets the tone. A sharp concrete façade broken by one perfectly placed plant. Inside, the space is all lines and angles. White walls. Sleek countertops. The espresso machine looks like a spaceship. It’s all very…Swiss. About Life Coffee Brewers The exterior is unassuming. No flashy signage, no crowd of influencers. Just a glass window, a subtle logo, and a barista with the kind of calm energy that makes you want to trust their taste in music and beans. Inside, it’s standing-room only—like a Tokyo coffee bar squeezed into a Saigon sidestreet. The design is pure efficiency. Every surface does something. Every shelf, hook, and tile has a role to play. Yet it doesn’t feel clinical. There’s personality in the playlist, soul in the ceramics, and detail in the smallest places—like the handwritten note tucked near the drip station or the perfectly arranged pastries on concrete slabs. #design #designtok #designtiktok #designideas #coffeeshop #saigon #saigondesign #cafesaigon #coffeesaigon #hochiminh #hcmc #coffeetiktok #coffeeshopvibes #cafevietnam #vietcoffee #cityguide #vietnam #branddesign #vietnamtravel
